Social Studies: Boycotting

Boycott - to combine in abstaining from, or preventing dealings with, as a means of intimidation or coercion -- dictionary.com

Where did this strange word come from?

In 1880 Irish tenant farmers organized a revolt against a British estate manager in County Mayo. Why? They where out raged by the high rental cost and demanded he reduce the rent because of a bad harvest.

He got the constables to evict his tenants.

They reacted by denying him supplies or labor. His nerve broke and he left the country.

Who was this manager the laborers were so angry with? Charles Cunningham Boycott.

His name is now tied to the revolutionary tactic.
